The good news is there are a lot of cruises out of Boston this spring, summer and fall. The bad news is they aren`t all cheap, although there are some bargains.
The Black Falcon terminal again plays host to Norwegian Cruise Line`s Norwegian Majesty for a full season of weekly Bermuda cruises offered April through October. Depending on when you travel, starting fares as listed in the brochure range from $749 to $1,299. (The cheapest rates are available in late September and October).
But go to such Internet sites as www.icruise.com
and you`ll see sale prices for the May 5 cruise, for instance, starting at $697. Look for land-based travel agents to have comparable offers.
The Norwegian Majesty itinerary includes a full day at sea on the way there and on the way back, and four days docked in St. George`s, Bermuda. Norwegian Cruise Lines also offers 10-night Canada/New England cruises, round-trip from Boston on the Norwegian Dream in September and October. Sailings on Sept. 25 and Oct. 5 are priced from $1,399, and a sailing on Oct. 15 is priced from $1,299, according to the brochure. The itinerary includes Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Quebec City and Bar Harbor.
Holland America Line has committed its pretty flagship Rotterdam to 7- and 10-day cruises one-way from Boston to Montreal (you have to make your own way back) in June and July. Rates in the brochure start at about $1,449.47 for the 7-day sailings June 29, and July 13 and 27, but again, there are deals on the Web for several hundred dollars less. (I found the July 13 sailing priced online from $1,107, for instance.) The 10-day sailing is June 12.
The weeklong Rotterdam itinerary includes Bar Harbor, Halifax, Sydney and Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island and Quebec City. The 10-day cruise adds an overnight in Quebec City and a few other stops.
Fresh from its debut in Europe, Royal Caribbean`s brand new Brilliance of the Seas explores the New England/Canada coast this fall. Seven-day sailings are round-trip from Boston visiting Bar Harbor and Portland, Halifax and Sydney, and St. John, New Brunswick, while 10-day sailings, also round-trip from Boston, visit all of the above plus Quebec City. Regular fares start at $1,049 for the 7-day sailing on Sept. 15, $1,299 for the 10-day sailing on Oct. 22, and $1,399 for the 10-day sailings on Sept. 22, and Oct. 2 and 12. Again, online I found a starting fare for the Oct. 12 sailing of $1,035.
If you`re traveling as a family, keep in mind all the lines offer special fares for third and fourth passengers sharing a cabin (those fares on the Norwegian Majesty are from only $319 a person) and Holland America also offers special fares for kids ages 2 to 18.
