Expedia and Ziff-Davis Publishing Bring Online Travel to Print With New Travel Magazine

26th Jan 2000

Leaders in Online Travel and Magazine Publishing Partner to Expand Expedia Brand to Print

Expedia, Inc. (NASDAQ: EXPE), the leader in online travel planning, today announced a joint agreement with Ziff-Davis Publishing, the leading Internet and computing magazine publisher, to launch a new high-quality travel magazine. A natural extension of Expedia’s commitment to provide travelers with pertinent and timely information, the magazine joins Expedia® Radio in complementing the information found on the Expedia.com? travel Web site.

Last summer, Expedia Radio broke new ground as the first radio show for the online travel industry. Similarly, the new magazine is online travel’s first print subscription publication and is scheduled to begin production later this year. The magazine will focus on travel destinations, services, suppliers, and products that are targeted to leisure and business travelers. Building on the success of Expedia Radio, which is currently broadcast by 60 radio stations and reaches a million listeners a week, this new publication will provide useful and relevant travel information designed to help readers plan vacations and business trips.

With the largest travel storefront on the Internet, a brand that people recognize and trust, and a reputation for providing visitors with valuable insights above and beyond just buying a ticket, Expedia provides the ideal partner with which to build the first print extension of online travel,” said Jim Spanfeller, executive vice president and publishing director at Ziff-Davis Publishing. “We are excited to work with Expedia on this new initiative and believe we can utilize the distribution and marketing model we used when launching Yahoo! Internet Life magazine—both of which are extensions of highly successful Web sites.”

The new magazine will be launching as a bimonthly publication available on the newsstands and by subscription. “Through Expedia.com and Expedia Radio, millions of people see and hear valuable travel insights,” said Rich Barton, CEO of Expedia, Inc. “Launching this magazine is the logical next step in extending our brand across different media and will be a great way to help our customers take those insights with them—whether or not they’re online. With Ziff-Davis’s established leadership in the publishing arena and its tremendous success in working with Yahoo!, our relationship has all the right ingredients.”
