Caribbean Star offers a `sporting` chance

Caribbean Star Airlines is expected to move approximately 100 swimmers and supports from Grenada, Dominica, St. Vincent and Antigua to St Lucia for the OECS Championships next month. The tournament will take place at the Rodney Bay Aquatic Centre from 7th - 9th November.

The Airline also moved several regional netball teams to participate in the Helen of the West Netball Festival sponsored by Nestle. 7 teams are competing in the tournament being held at the Vigie Complex in St Lucia and already 4 teams have qualified for the semi-finals. Qualifying teams are: Police from Trinidad, Sir Viv All Stars from Antigua, Trac from St Vincent and Elite Strikers from St Lucia, with finals set for Saturday afternoon in Castries.

Sandra Scotland, Marketing Director for the airline confirmed that they have moved over 44 players and team officials to St Lucia for the event. Scotland added that the airline is committed to supporting regional culture and sports. Emphasis is pla ced on sports, as it is an avenue for our youth to develop not only their physical skills but also their social, emotional and mental agility.

This Netball Festival is a sports tourism event hosted by the St Lucia Netball Association in conjunction with the St Lucia Tourist Board. Consultant on the project Mr. ‘Reds’ Perriera says, “The tournament is going to be an annual event and has loa ds of potential”. Perriera went on to add that 2004 will attract many more leading Caribbean clubs and will feature 2 English clubs that have already signed on.
