Canouan Island Heart of the Grenadines

Untouched spaces, isolation, feeling of a pristine Caribbean island, low density all blended with luxury amenities and a vibrant local community, are the dictates of this luxury development.

This is the meaning behind an operation that has developed over a ten year span through the investment to date of US$200 million and is the most important economic reality within St. Vincent & the Grenadines the multi island state in the Caribbean.

The Canouan Resorts Development (CRD) project which is all encompassing of this 3sq. mile island, has managed with sensitivity to develop the most difficult task of installing major infrastructure whilst adhering to the disciplines of unspoiled luxury.

A balanced development, that recognises the growing needs of the local community and of the visitor. Modern amenities have included, paved roads, electrical power, water production, a clinic, commercial jetty, new fisheries complex, early education facilities and a technical training school.

A modern airstrip has also made possible ease of access with American Eagle scheduling international flights.

As a result, Canouan Island was then ready to introduce to the tourist market a variety of products that cherish the individuals desire for something special and different within the Caribbean destinations.

Tamarind Beach Hotel & Yacht Club the first facility to be opened to the visiting public is a lively, barefoot elegant, Caribbean hideaway. It is perfect for anyone seeking freedom and fun. Located in the main village of Grand Bay it is a delightful all beachfront property.

With the newly opened Moorings Yacht base on its doorstep, this part of the island is ideally positioned to enchant visitors to Canouan.

The ultra luxury Carenage Bay Resort was introduced to the market in 1999. The precious last jewel of the renowned Italian architect Luigi Vietti, with its 59 villa suites nestled around a spectacular lagoon and marvelous white sandy beaches, it pampers guests with four restaurants, one of the largest pools in the southern Caribbean, a scenic Golf Course, and its five-star encompassing service.

In February 2002, the unsatisfactory management contract with Rosewood Hotels and Resorts was terminated and the Resort was temporary closed until the winter season of 2003.
This now enables the resort, in constant research to attain the highest quality, to add a whole range of new luxurious amenities including an extensive full serviced Spa and new beachfront Royal Suites. The Resort is already ahead of schedule with the fabulous upgrading of the 18-hole Golf Course which Jim Fazio has created. “I haven`t seen anything like the seven holes on top of the mountain, anywhere; as pretty a place as I`ve ever seen for playing golf” says Fazio.

The real estate development, with an additional investment of 250 million dollars, over the next 9 years, is sure to set the standards for luxury private residences. CRD in partnership with the Trump Organisation for sales and marketing, Edward D. Stone and Associates for land planning, Ernst & Young (NY) for the financial business plan, and Ricketts & Associates for promotion, the vision is sure to become a successful reality.

Over the years CRD has grown with the community in the development of the island together. Going through some troubled times, but the days are long gone when candles were the only source of light, the sea - the only source of food, and migration - the only dream of progress. The community of Canouan also has plenty to say about the positive and beneficial results that have already been introduced and are excited about future plans.

Dawn Sandy, a local entrepreneur, said in a recent interview: “Canouan has more opportunities than any of the other Grenadines Islands. We are all realising how important this development is to Canouan”.

The vision of the Costa Smeralda in the Caribbean is well on target.
