Commissioner of Tourism Pamela C. Richards was selected recently by Black Meetings & Tourism magazine as one of the most influential African-American managers in the hospitality, meetings and tourism industry. The magazine will announce Richards’ mark of distinction in its October/November 2002 issue.
Travel & Leisure magazine recently released its annual readers’ poll, “World’s Best Awards - The Ultimate in Travel.” According to Travel & Leisure readers, St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas ranked high among all other Caribbean islands. Readers of the popular travel magazine rated destinations throughout the world according to the following categories: overall vacation destination; natural attractions; activities and sights; restaurants and food; people; and value. St. John, known for its ecotourism and National Park land, received especially high marks of distinction. The island ranked first among all other Caribbean destinations for natural attractions; second for activities and sights; third for overall vacation destination; and eighth for overall value. St. Thomas stood out for its activities and sights, and St. Croix was recognized for its restaurants and food.

Cold Stone Creamery, a national ice cream franchise, will open a new store on St. Thomas in Red Hook’s American Yacht Harbor on September 20. The ice cream franchise is known for creating custom made ice cream flavors by blending requested ingredients in front of the customer. In addition, employees of the creamery often entertain guests by performing ice cream theme songs and dancing. The new dessert shop will be child-friendly. St. Thomas’ Tillett Gardens recently welcomed a new attraction, JKay`s restaurant. The new restaurant specializes in certified Angus steaks, deep-dish Chicago-style pizzas, refreshing drinks and a quiet relaxing atmosphere.
