Tired of the same old backyard barbeque featuring overdone burgers paired with stale buns and soggy chips? This Labor Day weekend, why not indulge in gastronomic delights from some of the nation’s most esteemed chefs at SuperClubs’ Grand Lido Negril’s third annual “Epicurean Escape” event, held in partnership with Food & Wine magazine and featuring guest chefs from the magazine’s “Top Ten New Chefs” list. Not only will guests have the opportunity to feast on culinary masterpieces paired with outstanding wines and cocktails, but also to take part in classes, international food and beverage tastings and gala parties.
This year’s “guest star” chefs include Kelly Courtney, most recently executive chef of Chicago’s Mod restaurant, and named a “Top Ten New Chef” by Food and Wine in 2001. Courtney, who recently left Mod to begin a new venture, is well-known for her “seriously playful” modern American dishes. Another honored guest at this year’s event is executive chef John Besh of Restaurant August in New Orleans, who made Food & Wine’s “Top Ten New Chefs” list in 1999. Besh, who creates dishes centered in local ingredients utilizing French techniques gleamed from his extensive culinary background, is heralded for the authenticity of his French country cuisine.
Grand Lido Negril’s own star chef, executive chef Martin Maginley, will add his particular touch to the gourmet weekend. A dominant force on Jamaica’s culinary scene, Maginley won the Chef of the Show award in the 2001 Professional Culinary Arts annual competition Jamaica.
In addition to dining on the delectable concoctions of this dynamic trio, guests will have a full schedule of food and pastry demonstrations and competitions to choose from. Also featured will be a master sommelier, who will conduct wine tastings throughout the weekend and who will hand-select the wines to accompany each menu. Jamaican rum tastings, coffee tastings and mixology classes are also planned for the holiday weekend, which will be crowned by dual evening events: a grand gala dinner on Saturday night featuring a six-course meal and a variety of wines perfectly paired with each delectable course; followed by a Sunday evening extravaganza with a sunset dinner served on-board the resort’s luxury yacht, the 147-foot M/Y Zein (formerly the honeymoon yacht of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier).
Four-night packages to Epicurean Escape start at $1,660 per couple, excluding airfare. Once at the resort, guests will never need their wallets until checkout time, since all meals, activities and entertainment are included - including gratuities.
