Built around the ruins of a 1680 farmhouse at Christian Bay, Southampton and originally owned by Marmaduke Dando, The Reefs Beach Club, as it was known, opened its doors in 1947.  It was the first cabana style beach resort in Bermuda.
Prior to opening, The Reefs had the traditional Bermudian roof wetting celebration where Bermuda Black Rum christens the new roof.  During the ceremony, several copies of the September 13, 1947 newspaper and five shillings of British currency, together with a copy of the Companies Act, were sealed into a secret chamber built into a chimney.  By November 1947, the entire project had been completed and The Reefs consisted of the main clubhouse and twenty-four cabanas.
Over the years, The Reefs has expanded.  In 1969, some of the original cabanas were demolished and rooms 301 to 330 were built.  In 1972, the pool was constructed, and in 1975, the rooms under the terrace were completed. The main clubhouse was remodeled in 1982 with the addition of the northern dining room and remodeling of the bar.  In April 1984 and April 1985, eight of the original cabanas built in 1947 were demolished and 16 new guest accommodations in two blocks of eight were constructed to the south of the steps leading to the beach. The beach bar and Coconuts were rebuilt in the winter of 1985/86, and the Conservatory dining room was added in 1988.

Today, The Reefs consists of 67 first class guest accommodations, two bars, three restaurants, two tennis courts, a fitness center, seven specialty one-, two- and three-bedroom Cottage Suites, eleven new junior suites, the island’s only infinity pool and a newly renovated entrance.

As it was in 1947, The Reefs still remains one of the most beautiful resorts on the island.  The Reefs suggests a lull and tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, which many thousands of repeat guests have come to expect and look forward to year after year.
