Jamaica Goes Techno @ EIBTM 2002

By participating in the Technology for Meetings area at EIBTM 2002, Jamaica declared its intention to become a Mecca for business travellers, who can enjoy the same cutting edge technology and meeting facilities as they would find in Europe - but in the magical Island of Jamaica.

Jamaica as a destination truly has something to offer everyone. As major sponsors of the Technology for Meetings area at this year`s EIBTM, Jamaica promoted itself as an advanced `Meeting Paradise`. When European meeting and incentive groups travel here, they can expect to experience pampered meetings with access to the latest speedy technology that is available within Jamaica`s telecommunication infrastructure. This is delivered in true sophistication and luxury, surrounded by white sand and blue lagoons.

The EIBTM Technology for Meetings Area presented hosted buyers and planners with the opportunity to learn the latest developments, innovations and trends. Time and cost saving ideas displayed included video and internet conferencing for meetings and EIBTM`s enhanced online diary. Visitors were also allowed unlimited access to their e-mail - an invaluable service, which business travellers increasingly rely upon.

Jamaica`s intention here at EIBTM was to do something new and provide a useful service. David Barber, Deputy Director of Tourism for Jamaica Tourist Board  told Internet Travel News:

“We wanted to try something different. This has been a new departure and I am pleased that we did it. It has worked to our advantage, bringing in people with a real interest in the destination”.

Torrance Lewis, Sales Representative from the Jamaica Tourist Board commented on the Meetings for Technology Area to Internet Travel News:
“It`s been a very good idea. People increasingly need to have access to their email. When attending a show like this, it is not always possible to go and sit at a computer for an hour or more, free of charge. Someone needs to provide this service and we are glad to have been able to do this.”

The Jamaica Tourist Board, Sandals
& Beaches
Resorts, Great Vacations Ltd, Half Moon Resort, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, Jamaica Tours
, Air Jamaica and World Internet Group, welcomed visitors into the Technology Area with their enticing stands, displaying the latest of their innovative offerings.

Specifically for EIBTM, special convention packages were on offer from Air Jamaica, Jamaica Tourist Board and leading hotels of Jamaica. To ensure ease of travel, Air Jamaica have recently increased their air capacity, with a scheduled daily air service from London Heathrow and twice a week from Manchester.

Jamaica boasts some unique and historical venues for special events, including spectacular outdoor locations, perfect for team building and banquets.

Jamaica is equipped with modern meeting space with audio/ visual technology. Its modern telecommunications infrastructure is capable of offering internet and satellite services. Furthermore, ADSL satellite links in Jamaica enable those hotels with meeting space to offer broadband videoconferencing technology.

Jamaica can also boast GSM cellular telephone technology and European compatible telephone systems. This means that European visitors can use their laptops and PDA`s as well as cell phones in Jamaica. As soon as a traveller steps off a plane into Jamaica, he/ she can switch on their cell phone to receive instantaneous and seamless connection; as one of the only 3 Caribbean Islands to have this facility, this is a very strong selling point for Jamaica.

Craig Martin, General Manager of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts told ITN: “Jamaica are the innovators and doing something a little different. We will send the message home that Jamaica is the place where the internet centre is”.

One of Jamaica`s success stories, Sandals, offer meetings and incentives groups the option of six Sandals properties to choose from in Jamaica. Each resort offers multiple fine dining options, land and water sports and one of the Caribbean`s premier golf and country clubs - all included in a one group rate. John D. Lynch, Executive VP Sales has seen the Meetings Area at EIBTM as extremely positive. He told ITN:
“We think that there is a tremendous interest in technology and sponsoring the Meetings for Technology area has been an excellent way of talking to people”. He added “Hopefully we can do this again with the World Travel Market, only next time, we will do it even better”.

Exhibiting at EIBTM, Half Moon Resort offers over 20,000 square Feet of conference and banqueting to the meeting planner. Business travellers are also presented with the perfect chance to unwind with the use of 13 tennis courts, squash, equestrian centre and a fitness spa as well as superb cuisine and 54 swimming pools.

At the end of EIBTM Dave Warmington, Group Sales Manager for Half Moon reflected over the show with Internet Travel News: “The show has been a little quieter than usual, however we have seen quality clients here at EIBTM and that is what is important”.

Technology has found its way into every niche of travel, improving and enhancing services and offering new opportunities. Jamaica has clearly recognised changing industry requirements and the message here at EIBTM is clear. Jamaica will be there first. Evolving to combine their stunning, tropical destination with dynamic, state of the art technology, Jamaica is the ultimate business get away.
