clickair unveils new UK route

clickair has commenced its latest route between London Gatwick and Vigo in northern Spain. The new route is especially significant as it’s the first time there have been direct flights from the UK to Spain’s Pontevedra province in South Galicia.  The three times weekly (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday) flights to Vigo, operated with an Airbus A320, got off to a good start with it’s first flight on 21 June.

clickair worked with the Foundation Provigo for more than a year studying the desirability of this link to London.  It is hoped the route will support 60,000 passengers in its first year, taking the number of passengers travelling through Vigo’s expanding international Peinador Airport to 1.5 million passengers during 2008, according to statistics from Spanish Airports and Air Traffic authority AENA.

Significant investment has been made to the infrastructure of Peinador Airport by AENA in readiness for service start.  Vigo, the largest city in Galicia with a population of 300,000, is attracting an increasing number of business travelers and tourists.  The area’s traditional shipbuilding and fisheries activity coexists with a rich history and culture that predates the Roman conquest.

A major natural harbor, Vigo is also a traditional port-of-call for British commercial vessels and sailing yachts after crossing the Bay of Biscay en route to the coasts of North Africa, Gibraltar or the Canary Islands.  Unlike other Galician towns, Vigo enjoys high summer temperatures and milder winters owing to the influence of the warm-water Gulf Stream current.  The region also boasts beautiful beaches and a very cosmopolitan outlook.
