Northwest Airlines has announced that standard travel agency commissions will be eliminated for tickets sold on or after October 1, 2008 in Japan. The decision has been made as part of an ongoing company-wide initiative to reduce costs, including those related to sales and distribution, and to promptly adapt to meet the changing needs of our customers. Northwest Airlines will continue to work closely with its travel partners and customers to ensure a successful transition to the new policy.

The commission reduction will help establish a more transparent pricing and fee structure and will support agencies offering different levels of customer service depending on the needs and demands of their customers.

Jeffrey S. Bernier, Northwest Airlines’ Managing Director Japan, said, “As the environment continues to change, we must be more competitive in order to maintain our leadership position in Japan. This step will lead to the establishment of a more robust travel market in the future, which will allow us to better serve our customers and help offset the skyrocketing cost of oil.”
