Leisure technology supplier, Comtec, has revealed plans to undertake significant further development of the www.travel.co.uk comparison site.
Following a strategy review, led by ex-Teletextholidays and Octopustravel.com Managing Director, Ray Mason, the ownership of the www.travel.co.uk URL will be transferred to Travel.co.uk Limited which, although independent of Comtec, will continue to use Comtec technology to power what Mason describes as a “significantly enhanced website which will take meta search and product comparison sites to a new level.”
A beta version of a consumer-facing website was launched earlier this year, offering a comparison service for holidays, flights and hotels. Comtec indicated that the objective of the beta release was to gauge market reaction, particularly from trade clients.
According to Comtec, the success of this phase has now led to plans to push ahead with significant further development of www.travel.co.uk. Simon Powell, Comtec’s CEO commented, “the URL is an asset that we have owned for over 10 years but which we’ve never exploited, until now. Feedback from the beta phase has been very positive with both tour operators and travel agencies keen to learn about our plans for the site and find out how they can utilise one of the most memorable website addresses in the industry as an additional channel to market.”
Mason’s brief has to been to develop a proposition for www.travel.co.uk that leverages Comtec’s technology, and the value of the URL, whilst providing tour operators, suppliers and agents with cost-effective, incremental, sales. Mason believes that he has done just that, although he is not giving away many details at present: “The new website which is now in development goes two steps further than any other site in the marketplace. I don’t want to say too much at this stage, but a combination of Comtec’s powerful booking technology, highly innovative design and user-functionality, along with one of the best URL’s in the industry, will enable us to deliver a unique distribution opportunity to the travel trade. No-one else is doing what we have planned and we believe that travel providers will love it as much as consumers.”
Comtec has formed a dedicated team, led by Mason, to deliver future developments of www.travel.co.uk, with the next release expected to go live in May 2008.
