King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand is the world’s longest-reigning monarch and is much loved and revered by the people of Thailand. His birthday falls on December 5, a national holiday in Thailand, and is celebrated with a number of events held around that date. As it is his 80th birthday this year, the celebration has been year-long, and will culminate with the Trooping of Colors, four days of fireworks in Bangkok, a concert at Sanam Luang, and a public audience on the grounds of the Grand Palace.

The Trooping of Colors will take place on December 2nd at the Royal Plaza. The Royal Guards, in their colorful regalia, swear allegiance to His Majesty during this magnificent display. The ceremony symbolizes the bond between the monarchy and the subjects of Thailand, and has taken place every year since 1880.

Fireworks will be displayed for four days this year, starting at the Royal Turf Club (Phitsanulok Road) on December 4, and then in nine spots along the Chao Phraya River on December 5.  On December 6 the Royal Sports Club (Childom / Siam BTS stations) will host another display, and finally on the 8th of December the last of the fireworks will go up at Benchakiti Park (Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre MRT station).

The King will make his public address on December 5 at 10.30 am from the balcony of Chakri Maha Prasat Throne Hall, located in the Grand Palace compound. Nearly one million Thais attended the public audience last year to catch a rare glimpse of their much-loved monarch and this year will undoubtedly see a larger attendance.
