UK’s smallest city attracts surfers

A new website, funded by Mendip District Council and Business Link Somerset, is giving a fresh look on the range of attractions and venues in the historic city of Wells. From accommodation and shopping guides to what’s on and annual events, the new site at is being targeted at web surfers who may want to visit or stay in Wells.

Dominique Swain, Mendip District Council’s regeneration officer for Wells, said: “The main aim of this new site is to promote Wells as a tourist destination, and generally promote local businesses, attractions and produce, as well as a calendar detailing the range of events that take place in our wonderful city.”

Although its official launch will take place next week (Tuesday), there are already plans to develop it to include pages about Wells’ twin towns, forums for people to chat with each other and sports pages.

Cllr John Osman, Mendip’s portfolio holder for regeneration and also a Wells city councillor, said: “This website is a fantastic opportunity to promote Wells as a fabulous tourism attraction, appealing to visitors and local residents. It will ensure that the name of Wells, as a great place to come, takes a more high profile position in key internet search engines such as Google.

“Wells is one of the jewels in the south west’s tourism crown and we must do as much as we can to boast what it has to offer, not only to benefit local traders and businesses but to boost the local economy in the whole of Mendip.”

The ongoing funding of the website is expected to be met by local retailers, businesses and attractions paying a subscription to be listed on the site.

The new site will give those subscribed the chance to receive feedback, from how many visitors browse the site to which particular areas of Wells visitors are most attracted to when they surf the internet.
