“Although we introduced our Quan spa concept only three years ago, Quan is attracting a loyal following among those Spa-Goers who value authenticity and overall wellness,” said Mr. Rhett Pickering, director of spa operations and development for Marriott’s Asia Pacific Region. “We are absolutely thrilled to introduce the Quan Spa concept to 12 new JW Marriott, Marriott and Renaissance hotels and resorts throughout the Asia Pacific region and expect additional Quan Spas in the coming years. Each Quan spa will be uniquely inspired by the local culture and concentrate on traditional healing and wellness rituals indigenous to its location.”

The next Quan spa set to open will be at the new Renaissance Shanghai Yuyuan Hotel scheduled to open later this month. The 10-treatment room spa will feature the Deep Blue Ocean Ritual, a deeply relaxing massage utilizing the restorative elements of sea-water and incorporating a blend of soothing massage techniques. In addition, the spa will offer a full range of treatments including facials, hydrotherapy, Vichy treatments and body scrubs.

The new JW Marriott Hotel Beijing will open in November 2007. The hotel will boast its own nine-treatment room Quan Spa complete with relaxation lounges, steam and sauna, indoor heated pool, private hot tubs, cool drench showers and heat experience zone. The spa’s signature treatment will be the Indoceane Ritual, a must for the spa-goer looking for a true multi-sensory experience. The treatment begins with a sweet and savory body scrub followed by a calming milk bath. An extended relaxing massage and sublime body wrap complete the journey.

‘Quan’ means “a source of pure water” and is derived from the Chinese character for ‘white’ (Bai) and ‘water’ (Shui).

“We selected Quan as the name of our Spa concept because water signifies energy, prosperity, wholeness and all things pure,” addede Rhett Pickering. “Water has the ability to cleanse and to soothe. At Quan, we have drawn on the restorative qualities of water to create an oasis of total harmony-for body and mind.”

Marriott International opened its first Quan Spa at the Sanya Marriott Resort & Spa in Hainan, China in 2004. Since then, Quan Spas have been introduced at the Renaissance Koh Samui Resort & Spa in Thailand and the JW Marriott Hotel Mumbai in India.

Earlier this year, the Quan Spa at the JW Marriott Hotel Mumbai was named to CondeNast Traveler’s Hot List of the Top 75 Spas in the World. Rhett Pickering studied at The Melbourne College of Natural Medicine and gained an Advanced Diploma of Health Science (Naturopathy) and Diploma of Herbal Medicine.
