UK survey reveals huge domestic holiday mileage

According to a new family study by Hilton Hotels, determined British
parents will travel more than five billion miles across the UK over a single holiday
period in an effort to entertain their kids. And the average mum and dad will pack
up their kids and drive around 120 miles a week during one summer break, or 720
miles in all.  Parents in Glasgow have shown to be the most eager to get on the
move.  They are prepared to drive 225 miles each week to take their youngsters to
places that will keep them amused - over one hundred miles more than the average,
according to the poll of 3,000 parents. In sharp contrast, parents in Brighton
travel the least - they are only prepared to rack up 50 miles a week in a bid to
keep their kids happy. Simon Vincent, President Hilton UK and Ireland said: “We know
that domestic travel is on the rise*, and as we continue to launch new family break
offers in the UK, it is important to understand family holiday trends.” “The arrival
of the Hilton Family of Hotels, which will include Hilton Garden Inn and Hampton by
Hilton are testament to this - offering a hotel at every budget point - which will
see even more choice for UK families on the go.” Also revealed in the survey is how
parents keep their children amused during the journey. Impatient youngsters soon get
bored in the back. The average child will wait just 19 minutes into the trip before
asking ‘are we there yet?’ Eleven per cent of parents admit they have had to abandon
ambitious plans for a long trip because their children have become too bored.
However, 60 per cent are quite prepared to turn to treats to keep their kids happy
as they toil along busy motorways. Chocolate is the number one bribe food (24%)
followed by ice cream (21%), drink (15%) and fast food (14%).  One in eight mums and
dads will even resort to paying their kids extra pocket money to keep them quiet.
There are currently 75 Hilton hotels across the UK and Ireland - including two
Conrad properties Conrad Dublin and Conrad Mt Juliet. All located in both rural and
urban destinations offering a hotel for every occasion.
