still remains interested in a potential tie-up with Alitalia, even though the Franco-Dutch airline is looking at a possible link with Spanish airline Iberia. “Alitalia remains an interesting partner for us,” an Air France source told the Italian newspaper La Stampa.
“But the (Italian) government must be clear that the European sector is moving, and that if Alitalia does not hurry, it risks being on the outside.”
The newspaper also cited sources from Air France saying that Iberia was among various options it was looking at with an eye to consolidation.
Air France was not immediately available to comment on the report.
Air France, Alitalia’s long-time commercial partner, has repeatedly denied any interest in tying up with the unprofitable Italian national carrier unless it turns its business around.
Air France has stayed out of Rome’s auction of Alitalia, in which final offers for the airline are due by July 23.
