Press: South Africa says won’t bankroll SAA

4th Apr 2007

South Africa will not support loss-making state-owned airline South African Airways forever, the public enterprises minister was quoted as saying on Wednesday. Alec Erwin told SAA Chairman Jakes Gerwel in a confidential letter the airline “cannot and will not be supported at all costs”, Business Day newspaper said and reported by Reuters news wire.

The airline, one of Africa’s biggest, said last week it wanted to split up the firm and slash costs to help return it to profit. It may then sell some units.

SAA expects to have lost more than 650 million rand ($90 million) in the business year just ended.
