Nevis in TV focus

Two local Nevisian students were in the spotlight and on camera this past week when the US nationally-syndicated television show, Awesome Adventures, filmed a 30-minute adventure series on Nevis.
Students, Latoya Jones and Rohan Jeffers, accompanied Awesome Adventures’ host, Mystro Clark, throughout the week as they explored nature, participated in a variety of sporting activities and tried out interactive educational opportunities available around the island.  The show’s production was filmed and recorded by local camera and sound crewmembers, Malcolm Ramsey and Stuart Jeffers.

Awesome Adventures airs on approximately 125 U.S. broadcast stations representing 85 percent of the country’s television households and 29 of the top 30 media markets. It has been on the air fifty-two weeks each year since 1998.  Each journey in the series is a lesson in the beauty of nature, its creatures, and the people who live in the host country.  Once the post-production work is completed stateside, the Nevis segment will begin running sometime in late spring/early summer of 2007.

The four days of filming on Nevis included various stops around the island that will highlight the destination’s culture and soft adventure opportunities.  Activities on the production team’s itinerary included a cricket lesson and an update on the World Cup Cricket Championship with Mr. Stuart Williams and Mr. Carl Tuckett, mountain biking with Winston Crooke and Reggie Douglas from the Nevis Cycle & Triathlon Club, a rainforest hike with Lynell Liburd from Sunrise Tours, Horseback-riding with Ellis Chaderton at the Round Hill Trail Ride, Netball at the Netball Complex with Ms. Vera Herbert, Touch & Go snorkeling and a swim with Crush, the Sea Turtle at Under the Sea, Sealife Education Center with Barbara Whitman, a visit with Vincent Weeks at the Nevis Bee Cooperative, a craft lesson at the Nevis Craft House with Mr. Keith Powell and a variety of watersports activities at Oualie Beach Resort, which provided accommodations for Mr. Clark and Awesome Adventures’ Executive Producer, Merv Jones.

The production was made possible by the efforts of the Nevis Tourism Authority and Cheryl Andrews Marketing in Coral Gables, Florida, the PR agency for the island.  Meals for the crew were provided at Oualie Beach Resort, Nisbet Plantation Beach Club, Wendy’s Deli, Rumours Bar & Grill, Golden Rock Plantation Inn, Gallipot Seafood Restaurant, Double Deuce and the Botanical Garden of Nevis.

Producer, Merv Jones, commended the work of the camera crew, the two students and the hospitality of the Nevisian people, saying, “We really enjoyed working with Malcolm Ramsey and Stuart Jeffers on this shoot.  It was one of the most trouble-free, technically smooth productions we’ve filmed in the Caribbean.  Latoya and Rohan are bright, energetic and exceptionally photogenic.  They were very professional and comfortable in front of the camera and that will come across well to the viewing audience.  They are excellent ambassadors for the island of Nevis.”

Host Mystro Clark noted, “We found the people on Nevis to be incredibly warm and friendly. Those who guided us through our many activities this week were extremely knowledgeable and lots of fun.  That will make for a very entertaining and educational program which is our primary goal.  We couldn’t be more pleased with the way this Awesome Adventures segment on Nevis turned out.”
