WTA takes centre stage at WTM

The World Travel Awards (WTA) took centre stage at this year’s World Travel Market (WTM) to make a key announcement and to present the prestigious WTA trophies to executives that were unable to attend the WTA gala ceremony in Turks & Caicos.
In a major new development, and in a bid to boost brand awareness, the World Travel Awards announced that they are expanding next year and will be hosting four regional awards ceremonies throughout 2007 with the grand finale ceremony set to take place on 11th December in Turks & Caicos.

The locations for these regional gala events, which were announced at the World Travel Market, include Abu Dhabi, Miami, Newcastle in the UK and Bali. These will cover the various country and regional level awards for the Middle East and Africa, the Americas, Europe, as well as the Asia-Pacific, respectively. The winners and top nominees at these awards will be put forward for global categories.

Karen Fitzgerald, PR Specialist Advisor for One NorthEast, took the stage on behalf of Stacey Hall, Communications Director, to reveal that the World Travel Awards Europe 2007 will make its debut at the Newcastle Gateshead for the World Travel Awards 2007.

Karin commented: As the winner of the title ‘World’s Best Regional Marketing Campaign’ for two years in succession, it is an honour for North East England to now be chosen to host this new, European round of what have become the most comprehensive awards in the global travel industry.” She added: “The European awards will be held on 9 October 2007 at the awe-inspiring Sage Gateshead music centre on the banks of the river Tyne in North East England.”

Following on from the announcement, winners were called to the stage to collect their awards. These included: Akbar Al Baker, CEO, Qatar Airways who picked up two awards for Middle East’s Leading Airline and Middle Eat’s Leading Business Class Airline; Emad Aziz, Chairman, Savoy Sharm picked up two awards for Egypt’s Leading Resort and Middle East’s Leading Villa; Carsten Schiek , General Manager, Maldive’s Leading Spa Resort, collected an award for Indian Ocean’s Leading Resort and Spa and Noel Massoud, General Manager, Emirates Palace, collected four awards for ‘one of the most aspiring properties in the Middle East’.
