US Virgin Islands in eco drive

In addition to the many luxurious and exclusive accommodations available to guests in the US Virgin Islands, the destination’s environmentally-conscious camps provide visitors with a new perspective on “island” travel.

America’s Caribbean welcomes guests to unique eco-camps surrounded by lush tropical settings with a history all their own.  Guests can experience the enriching, multi-cultural mixture of island living, food and nature while participating in camping at its finest.

At Mount Victory Camp in St Croix, guests select from a list of five different lodging styles that include three-platform dwellings, single platform dwellings, mahogany dwellings, bungalows and condo-bungalows.  Tent sites are available for adventurers who arrive with their own gear.  Mount Victory campers enjoy a farm surrounded by peaceful green meadows, forests, tropical wildlife and fascinating, historic stone ruins. Two hundred and fifty fruit trees are located throughout the property, along with a lumber mill, bathhouse and pavilion.

The comforts of home are available at Mount Victory Camp.  The bathhouse produces hot water from a solar thermal flat plate collector, and guests may watch the Caribbean stars or enjoy the fresh morning air in a unique open-roof shower.  At the social pavilion, visitors may cook, eat, drink and enjoy the company of other campers and locals.

On the island of St John, Maho Bay Camps is a natural oasis boasting three beautiful sister resorts: Harmony Studios, Concordia Eco-Tents, and Estate Concordia Studios.  Maho Bay Camps’ hillside location affords many of its tent-cottages with beautiful views of the blue Atlantic waters, other nearby islands and spectacular sunsets. The roomy tent-cottages are connected by wooden walkways and partially hidden by lush foliage offering privacy to its guests.  Screened windows and open air terraces take advantage of the cooling Virgin Islands trade winds.

Each tent-cottage provides a separate sleeping area with comfortable twin beds, bed linens, blankets, towels. All units are equipped with a propane stove, ice cooler, and cooking and eating utensils.

The immediate area surrounding Maho Bay Camps boasts beautiful hiking trails and historic plantation ruins. Barbecue areas and fresh water are available along the walkways.  When the sun sets, the town of Cruz Bay—less than half an hour away via local taxi service—offers an active nightlife for vacationers.

Harmony Studios provides more creature comforts for its guests, including large rooms and private bathrooms.  Its close proximity to Maho Bay Camps enables vacationers, honeymooners and families to take advantage of the secluded beach and many watersport activities like kayaking, windsurfing, sailing, snorkeling and scuba diving.

The Eco-Tents and Estate Concordia Studios are located at the East End of St. John on adjacent properties, approximately 25 minutes from Maho Bay.  The “eco-tents” are similar to the tent-cottages of Maho Bay Camps, and provide convenience and the comfort of private toilets, showers, solar energy and more elaborate kitchen facilities. Seven new units have been added recently, of which four are wheelchair accessible. Breathtaking vistas of the incomparable Caribbean are commonplace from these comfortable dwellings.
