Discovery rolls out NYC walking tour

Discovery Travel Media is launching a downloadable walking tour of New York City’s Chinatown. Timed to coincide with the upcoming premiere of DISCOVERY ATLAS: CHINA REVEALED on Sunday, October 1, the tour connects listeners with the people of Chinatown and their stories and customs.

The tour visits 10 landmarks and locations in historic Chinatown, including Columbus Park, Transfiguration Church and Chatham Square. The tour is highlighted by 15 interviews with Chinatown residents, community leaders, local historians, business owners and restaurant managers, providing a behind- the-scenes look at the people who live and work in this vibrant community. The people-centric perspective of the tour complements the DISCOVERY ATLAS series, which promises to present real-life portraits of ordinary people through epic storytelling and spectacular cinematography.

“We are very excited about the downloadable tour, since it can transform our audience from passive observers to active cultural explorers,” said Pat Younge, executive vice president and general manager, Discovery Travel Media. “By encouraging our viewers to experience the people, places and stories of Chinatown first-hand, we hope to foster an even deeper connection with Chinese and Chinese-American culture.”

The tour includes a map licensed courtesy of Explore Chinatown and directions for people downloading the content, presented as a series of podcasts, to their personal MP3 players for use on the streets of Chinatown. Photos of the storytellers and points of interest are embedded into the audio files, for playback within iTunes or video-enabled MP3 players. These images, which were taken by renowned Chinese American photographer Corky Lee, ensure that the tour can be enjoyed equally while strolling through Chinatown or listening from the comfort of a one’s own home.

To download the tour, please visit or search for DISCOVERY ATLAS podcasts in iTunes(R).
