Lufthansa expands Sao Paulo offer
Lufthansa customers will profit from more flights to South America as the long haul offer
is further expanding from Munich. From 13 September 2006 the German flag carrier
will fly daily to São Paulo from Munich in response to numerous requests from
passengers to offer this service now from Munich besides the one already operated
from Frankfurt. “Growth in Munich is focused on our long-haul routes, and we are
steadily pursuing this strategy with São Paulo. This move is also in response to the
strong demand from our customers for flights to Brazil,” says Karl Ulrich Garnadt,
Lufthansa Group Representative and Head of Hub Management at Munich.
SWISS and Lufthansa customers are deriving further benefit from the partnership of
these two quality airlines on services to and from São Paulo, Santiago de Chile and
Buenos Aires. The two carriers coordinate their schedules to create a “mini-hub” at
São Paulo that will permit transfers between SWISS and Lufthansa services to and
from South America. Passengers arriving from Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich will thus
be able to use the connecting flights of the respective partner carrier to Buenos
Aires and Santiago de Chile, which are operated as codeshare flights by Lufthansa
and SWISS. In reverse customers from Chile and Argentina can reach the three
European hubs mentioned above more flexibly.
São Paulo is the most important market for Lufthansa in South America. From its
Munich hub, the airline now serves 100 destinations in 37 countries, including 16
destinations in North and South America and Asia.
With a catchment area of 20 million residents, São Paulo is the industrial,
financial and cultural centre of Brazil and also the country’s main transportation
hub. One thousand German companies alone have their headquarters in this South
American city. Lufthansa will serve São Paolo from Munich on this new connection
with the flight numbers LH504/505 with an Airbus A340 in a three-class
configuration. Scheduled departure time from Munich is 21:30 hrs; the return flight
from São Paulo is planned for 12:50 hrs.
