Press: BA, Virgin face price fixing US lawsuit

26th Jun 2006

British Airways PLC and Virgin Atlantic are facing a class action lawsuit in the US over allegations of price fixing, the Sunday Times reported. The suit was filed in New York on Friday by law firm Cohen, Milstein, Hausfeld & Toll, a day after the UK’s Office of Fair Trading and the US Department of Justice announced they are investigating both airlines on the same issue.

Quoting documents filed by the lawyers, the article said BA, Virgin, and other unnamed airlines operated a ‘global conspiracy to fix, raise, maintain and/or stabilise prices for long haul passenger flights to and from the UK’.

It said Virgin and BA’s introduction of fuel surcharges was ‘concerted’, claiming the pair worked in a ‘cartel’, with increases progressing in a lockstep pattern’.
