Thomas Cook highlights responsible tourism

8th Jun 2006

Thomas Cook’s newest Summersun and Tropical Shores brochures, describing its holiday
programmes for the rest of 2006 and 2007, specifically highlight hotels with
‘responsible tourism’ policies. The brochures provide at-a-glance logos on hotel pages highlighting hotels that have
special facilities for children, adults, celebrations, all-inclusive holidays etc,
but the latest addition for the new brochures is a green ‘responsible tourism’ logo.

The 18 hotels that have been awarded these logos are those that have demonstrated
via detailed questionnaires that they take environmental and social issues seriously
and work to ensure that their operations run responsibly.

Each hotel achieved a perfect score on a checklist, taken from the Supplier
Sustainability Handbook and formulated by Thomas Cook in partnership with the
Federation of Tour Operators. Typical areas of focus include responsible approaches
to laundry, use of hot water, beach cleanliness and the local environment. Each
highlighted hotel also has independent accreditation from a body such as Green
Globe, EMAS and ISO 140001.

Tony Hopkins, Director of Product and Publishing, at Thomas Cook, said: “Responsible
tourism is increasingly on the agenda in the UK, and we wanted to highlight the fact
that this is something that Thomas Cook and its hotels take seriously. We liaise
with every hotel in our portfolio to express the importance of environmental and
social issues, as well as having many responsible processes in place across the
Thomas Cook organisation. The hotels highlighted are those that have exceptional
measures in place.  Now our brochures will help environmentally conscious travellers
choose a hotel whose principles match their own.”
