Leeds enjoys serviced apartments boom

A boutique serviced apartment residence which opened in Leeds last October has announced work on a second site almost twice the size of the existing development.

The Chambers on Whitehall waterfront, which offers business travellers and discerning tourists a home away from home in 34 apartments, has been running at 100 per cent occupancy for much of the time since its launch.

The company, headed by Yorkshire entrepreneur Christine Boothroyd, has brought forward plans for a second development in Leeds, on Park Place, to meet the demand - the new 63-apartment residence will create at least 20 new jobs.

Christine Boothroyd said: “We always felt there was demand for boutique serviced apartments in Leeds simply because, unlike other leading British and European cities, there wasn’t anything available here.

“However, we have been genuinely overwhelmed by demand, particularly from repeat business and we’ve been fully booked for much of this year.

“It was always in our plans to expand in Leeds, but we’ve now taken the decision to bring forward the development of the second site.

“At almost double the size of our Riverside West site, it will mean an expansion to staffing and we anticipate that at least 20 new jobs - the majority permanent, full-time positions - will be created across all aspects of the hospitality industry.

“We’re aiming to open by spring 2007, and for positions such as the new operations manager, for example, we’re already starting to look for appropriate staff.

“We have already built up a luxury brand and have created a loyal following, so we are looking forward to expanding The Chambers not just in Leeds, but outside the region.”
