Belfast City Airport is being re-named in tribute to football legend George Best. The announcement follows a series of meetings between the Best family and airport management.
The re-naming ceremony is taking place today, when the Best family and friends of the footballing genius gather at the airport for the official unveiling of the new signage - poignantly on the day Best would have celebrated his 60th birthday.
Airport chief executive Brian Ambrose told BBC news: “We believe that renaming the airport after George is a fitting and permanent tribute to his footballing brilliance.”
George’s family are said to be “absolutely delighted” by the gesture.
The Manchester United and Northern Ireland football legend died in November 2005 after suffering organ failure.
