Featured artists for the 6th Annual BVI Musicfest include international names such as Roberta Flack, The Stylistics, reggae stars Buji Banton and Luciano, rock act Five Star Iris and calypso from Traffic with Shurwayne Winchester and Nicole “Niki” David. The impressive line up is joined by a host of regional artists with music ranging from contemporary jazz, rhythm and blues, steel pan, reggae, to zook, calypso and funji.
Music of every genre is mixed with beach games, refreshments and a party atmosphere at Cane Garden Bay, one of Tortola’s most beautiful beaches “where the sound of music meets the sounds of nature.” The venue provides an especially laid-back feel to the event, with music-lovers enjoying the beach, sunbathing or swimming whilst listening to some of the best sounds around. The BVI Musicfest takes place from May 26 to 28 with tickets available in advance or on the night at $10 per ticket. Events kick off on Friday 26th May with DJ sounds from noon, followed by live Calypso and Caribbean bands until the early hours. This year the event will be covered by MTV’s Caribbean TV channel, TEMPO, the region’s top broadcaster for Caribbean culture and music.
The BVI Musicfest was launched six years ago and has become one of the top events in the British Virgin Islands. Past performers have included Gregory Isaacs, Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes, Maxi Priest, Jimmy Cliff, The Manhattans and Wayne Wonder. The BVI Musicfest is a not for profit event organized by a committee of BVIslanders and supported by generous sponsorship. This year’s headline sponsor is Cable and Wireless, with the BVI Tourist Board and Ministry of Education and Culture joining American Airlines, American Eagle, Ocean Conversion (BVI) and Long Bay Resort as Gold sponsors. Local businesses and enterprise provide further sponsorship at Silver and Bronze levels.
