Qantas has confirmed that a heavy maintenance check on a B747-300 aircraft would be carried out offshore next month by Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company Limited. The Chief Executive Officer of Qantas, Mr Geoff Dixon, said undertaking this work overseas had no bearing on the airline’s decision to continue to base its wide body heavy maintenance operations in Australia.
“We remain committed to our Australian heavy maintenance operations,” he said. “The simple fact is, however, that we are in a transition period, moving our B747 maintenance from Sydney to Avalon.”
Mr Dixon said up to 20 overflow heavy maintenance checks on Qantas aircraft were undertaken offshore every year at high quality, CASA-approved facilities. This particular check will take the total for 2005/06 to 10.
