Death toll grows in Bahrain boat disaster

31st Mar 2006

At least 57 people are confirmed dead after a crowded pleasure boat capsized in the Gulf off the coast of Bahrain, with at least 63 people were rescued from the vessel.

Britons, Bahrainis, South Africans, Egyptians and Filipinos were on board when the two-deck Arabic dhow keeled over during an evening dinner cruise and UK Foreign Office officials say Britons are confirmed among those killed.

Eyewitnesses said the boat appeared overcrowded, and capsized in calm seas not far from the shoreline.

The boat capsized at about 21.45 local time, near one of the bridges which links the capital Manama with al-Muharraq island.
