Qantas union action may hit Games

People travelling to the Commonwealth Games, as well as other fliers on Qantas, may be delayed as union workers gear up for industrial action.Strikes planned for Thursday concern plans to outsource work overseas.

The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) and the Australian Workers Union (AWU) have notified authorities of their intention to take protected action in two days time.

These two unions account for 2,100 of the 6,900 Qantas maintenance workers..

Unions have said there were no promises that the action would not disrupt travel to the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

Although Qantas Engineering executive general manager David Cox told the Australian Associated Press that the industrial action would have no impact on passenger travel, including travel to and from the Games.


Unions are looking to achieve a promise from Qantas to keep maintenance jobs in Australia.
