World Group win big at Sandy Lane

By Ben KilbeyIt was a day of international level golf at the 4th Annual World Travel Awards Golf Tournament this year hosted at the world famous and high profile Sandy Lane Golf Course on the Caribbean island of Barbados. Winning the overall tournament was the World Group team consisting of James Khan, Richard Upton, Carole Upton and Colin Watson.
12 teams of 4 golfers entered the high profile contest and the tournament was played under Royal and Ancient GC rules, the game was monitored under the watchful eye of golf veteran Anthony Bevan as tournament referee.

“It was a very good day of golf. Everybody seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves with some excellent golf being played. It is the fourth year of the tournament and every year it goes from strength to strength. It was a real privilege to host the event at world-leading hotel Sandy Lane. Well done to the winners, it must be a real high to play on this world renowned course and gain a win,” commented Bevan.

The longest drive was achieved on the 10th hole by David Crane of Cottage Travel Group. Nearest to the pin for the men was Jan Van de Post of InterContinental Hotels on the 7th Hole.

Speaking of World Group’s win, James Khan commented;

“What a great day, what a great win. Really this is one fantastic course, you could not have asked for a better round of golf. I congratulate my team mates who played wonderfully - we had some great competition.”

The runners up were American Airlines and in third place sat InterContinental Hotels.

Previous winners were as follows: 2000 Jamaica - Sandals Resorts, 2001 St Lucia - St Lucia Helicopters and 2003 Martinique - Spanish Tourist Board.

Prize Winners were presented with team photographs and James Khan accepted the WTA Award Trophy on behalf of the winning team at the World Travel Awards Ceremony the following evening.
