Deadline extended for top public sector tourism position

Caribbean nationals both within and outside the region who wish to apply for the Caribbean’s top public sector tourism position, have received an extension to the date by which they are to send in their applications. The Ad Hoc Search Committee of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) has extended the deadline for receipt of applications for the position of Secretary General of the organization to Wednesday, November 24th, 2004.

A decision on the new Secretary General is expected shortly after the expiration of the new deadline, said Hon. Aloun N’Dombet Assamba, Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism and chairperson of a Search Committee established by CTO Ministers of Tourism to formulate the Terms of Reference and to identify and recommend a nominee for the position to the Board of Directors. The Secretary General is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CTO and reports directly to the Board.

“The successful applicant is expected to assume office on the first working day in January 2005 but should be available for consultation before that date,” Minister Assamba said.

The Secretary General of CTO is responsible for creating strategies, special programmes and projects in furtherance of the objectives of CTO; ensuring the implementation of regional tourism policies and programmes as approved by the Board of Directors; administering and coordinating the activities and programmes of CTO; having ultimate responsibility for the finances and work plans of the organization and for the appointment, disciple and dismissal of staff.

“The Secretary General will be an authoritative voice and advocate for the tourism industry regionally and internationally,” the Search Committee chairperson stated.
