The Turks and Caicos Tourist Board is has announced that it has renewed their sponsorship agreement for a further two years with Tanya Streeter, who is widely recognised as the strongest freediver in the world.

Tanya Streeter, a world-class athlete with exceptional aquatic abilities broke an important freediving World Record in the No Limits Category off the shores of the Turks and Caicos on August 17th 2002. No Limits requires the diver to ride a weighted sled to depth and an inflated liftbag to the surface, making it the ultimate test of mental strength. She reached an amazing depth of 160m/525ft on one breath of air, which surpassed all of her female and male competitors, making her the deepest person in the world. The feat of a woman breaking a man’s world record had never been achieved in any sport until then. Sports Illustrated called her “The World’s Most Perfect Athlete”.

Tanya returned to the crystal blue waters of Turks and Caicos for another World Record attempt in the Variable Weight Category. Streeter defied human potential and made history once again in the Turks and Caicos by again shattering the World Record for men and women on July 21, 2003 with a dive to 122m/400ft. Although she again rode a weighted sled to the end of her descent rope, this category calls for the diver to surface under their own power, combining phenomenal mental and physical endurance. With Tanya’s strong physical and physiological capabilities she achieved her ninth world record to date. Having been inducted into the Women Diver’s Hall of Fame in March 2000, she is recognized as an extraordinary World Champion, and her combination of athletic ability and stunning looks has catapulted her and the sport of freediving into mainstream recognition.

“I fell in love with the Turks and Caicos the first time I visited many years ago, so it has been wonderful to set such important marks in my career in their beautiful waters,” said Streeter.  “A freediver couldn’t wish for better conditions and facilities in which to test themselves, so I am thrilled to extend my ambassadorship with the Tourist Board and look forward to promoting this fantastic destination all over the world.”

Tanya’s current World Records are in the Constant Weight, No Limits and Variable Weight disciplines. With these astonishing accolades to her name, Tanya Streeter continues her role as a Tourism Ambassador for the Turks and Caicos Islands.
