The Caribbean is the region that holds the highest number of Green Globe certified hotels worldwide, with more than 50 properties fulfilling Green Globe’s demanding requirements for environmentally-conscious management and practices. The trend is growing at a fast pace, with an expected 20 independent Caribbean properties that will receive certification by the end of 2004, as a result of a close cooperation with the Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism (CAST).

Under an agreement between CAST and Green Globe Asia Pacific, signed in October 2003 in Barbados, CAST is providing technical support and advice to these properties and showing them the way towards best practices and management standards promoted by Green Globe.

Properties in the Caribbean are becoming increasingly aware that sound environmental practices not only preserve the natural resources surrounding them, but it also allows substantial savings on operational costs and, perhaps most important of all, gives them an additional marketing tool to target the ever-growing number of environmentally-conscious holiday-makers.
