Ebookers’ Dhamija named top entrepreneur

The founder of online travel agency Ebookers has been named top of a list of Britain’s 100 leading entrepreneurs.
Dinesh Dhamija established Ebookers as a stand-alone company in 1999, turning it into a business with sales of more than £273 million last year. It had previously been the internet arm of Flightbookers, the travel agency founded by Dhamija and his wife.

Business magazine Management Today gave Dhamija top spot in a list also featuring businesses ranging from recruitment to concrete flooring. The study measures how well a business has developed sales and employment over the last five years, rather than just judging simple profit growth. Andrew Turner of Central Trust, a Norwich-based broker and a lender in the consumer finance sector, was second after sales of £39.8m in 2002.
