Sandals Negril Beach Resort & Spa Scoops Caribbean Green Award

Sandals Negril Beach Resort and Spa has been recognised as the 2003 Green Hotel of the Year in the large hotel category by the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA). This coveted award, sponsored by the CHA and the American Express Group, was presented at the annual Caribbean Hotel Association General Meeting and Conference in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. This accolade is added to a growing list of awards that recognises Sandals and Beaches Resorts environmental efforts.

Sandals Negril Beach Resort & Spa was chosen because of the resort’s advancements in creating a sustained tourism industry. Throughout the year, the resort is involved in programmes such as recycling and donating food waste to local farmers reducing landfill waste. Employees additionally contribute to a comprehensive community outreach programme in the Negril area.
The company states, “All Sandals and Beaches Resorts continue to pursue their environmentally friendly goals. Sandals Negril has created a formula for environmental excellence that all resorts will now follow to better their practices.”
Green Globe 21 has also awarded the prestigious Green Globe Certification to 15 resorts, including Sandals Inn, Sandals Montego Bay, Sandals Negril Beach Resort & Spa, Sandals Ocho Rios Resort & Golf Club, Sandals Dunn’s River Golf Resort & Spa, Sandals Royal Caribbean, Sandals Regency St. Lucia Golf Resort & Spa at La Toc, Sandals Halcyon Beach St. Lucia, Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort & Spa, Sandals Antigua Resort & Spa, Grande Sport Villa Golf Resort & Spa by Beaches, Beaches Boscobel Resort & Golf Club, Beaches Negril, Beaches Sandy Bay and Royal Plantation Spa & Golf Resort by Sandals.

The certification assessment process is a detailed management system audit that focuses on how a location manages its operations and how it addresses the issues of waste and wastewater management, fresh water and energy consumption, chemical use and air pollution and ecosystem development or management.
Green Globe 21 is the worldwide benchmarking and certification programme which facilitates sustainable travel and tourism for consumers, companies and communities. It is based on Agenda 21 and principles for Sustainable Development endorsed by 182 Governments at the United Nations Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992.
