The multi award-winning Soneva Fushi Resort & Spa has been instrumental in establishing a much-needed cultural centre on Baa Atoll in the Maldives.

The Malhos Cultural Centre is the culmination of years of work and co-operation between the people of Malhos and the Soneva Fushi Resort & Spa. The Resort raised almost US $900, with the help of the community, to build a centre that will showcase the history, culture and spirit of the Malhos people.

The Centre has been established to promote the rich cultural heritage of the Maldives and to showcase the way of life in Malhos and other nearby islands. The Malhos Cultural Centre is just one of the many projects planned and executed by the Management & Hosts of Soneva Fushi in the past years.

“We want the world to know how we live both simply and productively, by harnessing knowledge and skills in diverse ways without affecting the nature and environment. This centre will show how the economy and entertainment can be incorporated in a traditional way,” explained Khalid Waheed during the opening ceremony last month.

Guests visiting Malhos will be able to watch local people practice their skills in boat building, thatch-making, mat-weaving and other traditional crafts. There will also be dance and music presented by men and women of the village. Included in the performance will be the music of Bodu-Beru, Billaiy Dafi Nagun, Dhandl Jehun, and many other artists well known in the area.

All funds raised from visitor donations and sales of local wares will go back to the community. Founders of the Six Senses Hotels, Resorts & Spas and owners of Soneva Fushi Resort & Spa, Sonu and Eva Shivdasani, believe very strongly that they need to give something back to the community in which they operate, and also to maintain the unique environment. They have firm guidelines on social and environmental responsibility for the Six Senses group, with all properties contributing 0.5 percent of revenues towards socially responsible causes.

Six Senses is a Hotel and Resort Management and Development Company established in 1988, which owns the Soneva Fushi Resort in the Maldives and manages hotels and resorts under the brand names Soneva, Evason and Evason Hideaway.
