Introducing The Spa At Torrey Pines, La Jolla`s New Coastal Retreat For Wellness And Rejuvenation

The new Spa at Torrey Pines opening today in the seaside town of La Jolla in Southern California, is a luxurious coastal retreat where guests can indulge in traditional therapeutic treatments designed to promote relaxation and enhance wellness.

Central to the spa experience are treatments utilizing marine and botanical-based products from the European lines of Phytomer and Babor, reflecting the resort`s location on the coast and adjacent to the treasured Torrey Pines State Reserve. Sage, which is known for its purifying and detoxifying properties, is used in The Lodge`s signature treatment, the Coastal Sage Scrub performed in the Vichy shower. Located within walking distance from The Lodge, the Torrey Pines State Reserve is home to some 17 types of sage.

Spa director Darcie DeBartelo has designed treatment rituals that draw on spa traditions from various cultures. For example, guests can choose rituals including a scrub, wrap and massage based on principles of Ayurveda, thalassotherapy and other unique treatments. All rituals are accompanied by a personalized tea service. “In designing treatments for The Spa at Torrey Pines, I focused on the integrity and therapeutic value of each service,” states DeBartelo. “Our menu does not reflect trendy gimmicks, but focuses instead on experiences that have real physiological, psychological or beauty benefits. Guests embark on a journey designed to ease them away from the stresses of daily life towards a state of serenity.”

In addition to an extensive menu of massage, facials, wraps and hydrotherapy, hand and foot treatments are available. Many of the products used in the spa are available for purchase so guests can continue their spa experience at home.

Products such as the Coastal Sage Scrub are beautifully packaged in apothecary jars with the treatment`s instructions written out on a form reminiscent of a turn-of-the century prescription. The Spa is open to both hotel and day spa guests.

The spa`s design is influenced by the delicate principles of Arts & Crafts design as depicted by the style of Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Many of the furnishings are custom made and imported from Scotland. A feng shui expert was retained to advise on the layout of the 9,500 square-foot space designed to reflect a residential feel. In addition to 14 treatment rooms, the spa offers ample facilities where guests can spend an afternoon or a day using the dry saunas, herbal-infused steam rooms, aromatherapy inhalation rooms and a private meditation room. Between treatments, guests can relax and enjoy thoughtfully designed touches such as a fireplace in the women`s lounge and a large screen television and leather club chairs in the men`s lounge.

The ladies` area is decorated in soft pink, white and an iridescent oyster color with Mackintosh`s signature rose motif throughout, while the men`s area features a bolder palette of amber and black and a tree-of-life design.

A Cardio/Strength room features state of the art treadmills, elliptical trainers, stationary cycles and weight training equipment. Group fitness classes, such as yoga, Pilates mat, tai chi and stretching are conducted outside on the Arroyo Terrace, a wide grassy stretch overlooking the Torrey Pines Golf Course and the Pacific Ocean beyond. A junior Olympic-sized pool and spa are outside and allow guest to take advantage of the year-round temperate weather and beautiful views. A highlight of the fitness program are the daily private and group walks through the Torrey Pines State Reserve.

The Lodge at Torrey Pines pays homage to the early 1900s style of Craftsman architects Greene and Greene, designers of the famed Gamble and Blacker houses in Pasadena, Calif. The Lodge is owned and operated by Evans Hotels and features 175 guest rooms and suites, more than 13,000 square feet of meeting and banquet space and two restaurants, including the signature restaurant, A.R. Valentien, serving innovative California cuisine overlooking the Torrey Pine Golf Course and La Jolla Coastline. The Lodge is adjacent to the Torrey Pines Golf Course and is within walking distance of Torrey Pines State Reserve, two of La Jolla`s most treasured attractions.
