Jupiter Media Metrix: Airline sites challenging online travel agencies

Traffic to airline websites is growing faster than traffic to travel sites overall, and is catching up on the lead of online travel agencies, according to Jupiter Media Metrix.Visitors to all travel sites increased by 23.5 percent between February 2000 and February 2001, growing from 24.4 million to 30.1 million unique visitors. The number of unique visitors to airline sites was up 26.1 percent over the same period, from 8.2 million to 10.4 million, while traffic to online travel agencies was up 7 percent, from 14.4 million to 15.4 million unique visitors. Southwest Airlines has the most popular airline site, with 2.9 million unique visitors in February 2001, flowed by United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, and US Airways. The top online travel agency was Travelocity, with 6.9 million unique visitors, followed by Expedia, Priceline, OneTravel.com, and CheapTickets.com.
