Australian Travel Net Stats

17th Jan 2001

At first glance, a drop of 21% in the number of people buying air tickets on the Internet in Australia in December looks discouraging; then factor in that the bargains were bought in October and November and the lack of last-minute fare sales and the figures are brought into perspective.
Quantas sales were 40.2% down on their November tally, while a new entrant, Virgin Blue, increased their share of online ticket sales by 2.8%.
Meanwhile, according to Travel Asia magazine, Impulse Airlines, who provide services along Australia’s east coast, claim that 65% of their bookings originate on the Net and expect to achieve a 70% sell rate soon.
About half of all Australians say they will use the Net to buy air tickets, but many more use it purely to get information.
