Brits opt to stay closer to home this May Day, following recent travel chaos

Following massive ash cloud disruption which led to airspace over much of Europe being closed for five days, cheap flight site Skyscanner (www.Skyscanner.net) can reveal that domestic destinations have risen in popularity as May Day bank holiday locations.

Examining its pre and post-volcano flight search data, Skyscanner found that although flights to Malaga and Alicante remain the most popular for May Day travel, London and Belfast have risen in popularity substantially.

Following the volcano fiasco, London moved up a massive five places displacing Amsterdam, and Belfast was a brand new entry to the top ten. Dublin also moved up four places.

Barry Smith, Skyscanner Co-founder and Market Development Director commented:

“Many people were caught out by the volcano disruption leading to lengthy delays and added expense. It’s possible that more people are looking at ‘safer’ destinations for their May Day holidays. The thinking may be that if the volcano does go off again, it’s easier to get home from a domestic destination than one that’s further afield.”
