Bombardier: Interconnected mobility today for smart cities of tomorrow

The future success of urban centres rests on re-defining the way people move within and between these expanding social and economic hubs. The future success of urban centres rests on re-defining the way people move within and between these expanding social and economic hubs. Smart transportation networks that offer interconnected mobility by linking different modes of transportation seamlessly are vital to prevent congestion from bringing traffic to a halt. Bombardier calls this concept of inter-connectivity and inter-modality “urban flow”. The modes of seamless transportation developed by Bombardier range from trams and metros to game-changing electric mobility solutions for electric rail and road vehicles, while its state-of-the-art rail control solutions reduce the constraints of current networks.

BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 650 CBTC solution
The state-of-the-art CITYFLO 650 communications-based train control (CBTC) solution uses the most advanced technology in the world to facilitate operation of high density mass transit systems. Depending on the track layout and the train performance, headways of less than 60 seconds can be achieved. Wireless technology provides two-way communication between the rail vehicle and the track. The computer-based, radio controlled moving block automatic train control system does not require track circuits or an onboard operator.

The CITYFLO 650 solution can be overlaid on existing lines to improve performance without interruption to service. The new technology is in operation in 15 locations and on 17 lines around the globe. Its application ranges from networks carrying more than a million passengers each day or with more than 100 trains to implementations with short track and limited vehicles such as automated people mover (APM) systems at some of the world’s busiest airports. On Metro Madrid Lines 1 and 6, the operator has noted a 30 per cent increase in passenger carrying capacity since start of operations with the system. The latest applications are being delivered on the major four-line sub-surface railway of the London Underground, as well as in Brazil, China, Germany, Saudi Arabia and the USA.

BOMBARDIER INNOVIA turnkey systems
The BOMBARDIER INNOVIA product family of automated people mover (APM), automated monorail and metro systems ensures urban flow in cities around the world – safely, efficiently and flexibly. These driverless, state-of-the-art transit solutions for urban centres and airports usually run on slim, contemporary guideways that are architecturally designed to integrate seamlessly into different environments and use minimum space. The latest landmark project for Bombardier’s INNOVIA Monorail 300 technology, with an integrated CITYFLO 650 solution, is in São Paulo, where a new 24 km high capacity transit line known as Expresso Tiradentes is being constructed. The system, which includes 54 seven-car trains, will halve the daily commuting time for a half a million residents. The line is scheduled to open in 2015 and will serve as an extension of the São Paulo Metro Line 2. When fully equipped, the new line will have the capacity to transport 48,000 pphpd.

The light infrastructure of the INNOVIA Monorail system minimises the costs and disruption of civil construction. The elevated guideway structure is constructed off-site to permit rapid assembly on location and avoids the need for potentially expensive and time-consuming tunnelling works. This is a major advantage when introducing a new transit system in existing dense urban areas.

Bombardier metros
As the world’s leading metro supplier, Bombardier is shaping the future of mass transit travel. Its high-tech, high capacity metros deliver rapid, reliable and cost-effective transport solutions for more than seven billion trips globally every year, including major cities like New York, Montréal, London, Berlin, Shanghai and New Delhi. Bombardier’s metro concept is completely modular, enabling vehicles to be configured to meet customers’ infrastructure constraints as well as future needs. Bombardier has sold more than 3,900 BOMBARDIER MOVIA metro cars to date. The modern mass transit vehicles are designed for rapid, efficient and cost-effective performance with a capacity of up to 80,000 passengers per hour per direction (pphpd) at speeds of up to 100 km/h. The vehicles travel an average of about 120,000 km per year.

BOMBARDIER FLEXITY trams and light rail vehicles (LRVs)
In cities worldwide, as a solution to congestion, the tram is making a welcome reappearance on the streets. With increasing urbanisation, the demand for light rail solutions that are both technologically advanced and imaginatively designed is set to go from strength to strength. As market leader in the light rail segment, Bombardier offers modern mobility solutions fitting the requirements of any city with its FLEXITY family. The most comprehensive portfolio of the industry ranges from 100 per cent low-floor trams, 70 per cent low-floor trams and LRVs to proven dual system solutions.

As the latest flagship tram in Bombardier’s portfolio, the FLEXITY 2 vehicle combines market-leading experience and proven parts with visionary engineering. The low-floor design improves accessibility for passengers with disabilities and facilitates quick boarding and exiting to increase passenger flow. The innovative BOMBARDIER FLEXX Urban 3000 bogie ensures a smooth ride and minimises wear on the track, reducing the need for maintenance works. This vehicle is on display at InnoTrans 2012.

BOMBARDIER PRIMOVE e-mobility solution
The groundbreaking wireless PRIMOVE electric mobility solution presents the possibility of entirely electric intermodal urban transportation in the future. It allows trams like the FLEXITY 2 as well as electric road vehicles to operate without cables, wires or plugs. Mass transit networks, fleet operators and car users can now benefit from all the advantages of e-powered mobility, without experiencing the range and recharging constraints usually associated with electric charging.

In the first PRIMOVE bus project for commercial operation, Bombardier is cooperating with the German city of Braunschweig and the local operator Braunschweiger Verkehrs-AG to turn a section of the local bus network into an eco-friendly electric route. The project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development, will see two buses operating with PRIMOVE technology on a 12 km route from 2013. Bombardier has also tested a PRIMOVE application for trams successfully on a 800 m section of track in Augsburg, Germany, and tests with an electric bus and car are continuing in Lommel, Belgium, as part of the Flanders’ DRIVE research project.

BOMBARDIER TALENT 2 train
