StepMap offers a web-based tool to create Maps
Using external agencies, expensive graphic designers or complicated and costly software to create Maps for brochures and websites is a thing of the past. The Internet portal StepMap (http://www.stepmap.com) enables tour operators to create, customize and download Maps in high resolution for all purposes (web, print and mobile devices). StepMap is the only service offering and easy to use and affordable Map editor of high quality printable Maps. Over 700 tour operators use StepMap today. “StepMap is simple to use and available to the whole team, it makes creating map imagery a breeze. With the benefit of personalization to ensure our maps meet our brand guidelines, and in-built interactivity for use online, we couldn’t ask for a better product to meet our print and digital needs.” says James Innes Williams, Online Marketing & Publications Manager, Cox & Kings Travel Ltd.
Technical expert skills are not required; anybody can create a Map within a few minutes. There are no downloads or installations necessary either since the whole Map making process is done in the web browser. “We wanted to create a Map tool that can be used by everyone not just graphic designers – that enables tour operators and travel agents to react faster, be more flexible and save costs” says Ole Brandenburg, founder of StepMap.
Use cases range from high resolution Maps for print products (e.g. brochures) to interactive Maps for websites. They are also compatible with all mobile devices and tablets. An automated location system makes adding cities or towns a breeze. Having the option to add links, images and videos to locations on the Map adds a whole new dimension and makes them more engaging for a potential client looking for a tour or holiday. “It really is quite simple” says Brandenburg “StepMap saves you time and money without having to compromise in terms of quality”. Numbers speak for themselves. From the 700 tour operators who have been using StepMap only 2 have not renewed their license after the initial year.
StepMap launched in 2009 in Germany with the German version. In January 2013 the English version was launched and has seen tremendous growth ever since not just in the UK but also in the United States, Canada, Australia, South Africa and – a little bit surprising – India, Indonesia and Brasil. “It’s great to see English tour operators using our tool. It confirms our assumption that tour operators and travel agents around the world pretty much have the same basic needs – one of them being high quality, affordable Maps.” says Brandenburg.
