Travel broadcaster Phil Blizzard discovers that the One & Only Cape Town in conjunction with Shark Diving Unlimited in the cooler clime of South Africa offer school children what is perhaps their best adventure story before heading back to school.
Cage diving with Great White Sharks is the perfect way to banish the summertime blues and give the kids ultimate school holiday adventure. Shark Diving Unlimited offers child-friendly cage diving and breaching trips suitable for all ages, ensuring kids will have the best adventure holiday story upon their return to school.
Located in Gansbaai, the Great White Shark capital of the world, just two hours South of Cape Town, Shark Diving Unlimited is South Africa’s leading Shark Diving operation. Children will love the experience of donning a full wetsuit with hoodie, superhero style, boarding the speed boat and roaring across the seas to the shark spotting point. On the way they might see a whale, seal or a friendly Arctic Skua who will give the boat a flying escort out to sea. Then it’s time for a safety briefing and the cage is lowered into the water. There’s no restrictions on age or swimming ability to participate.
“The smallest ones are usually the first ones in the cage, they are fearless,” laughs Owner Mike Rutzen. “These days they are strapped to their Go Pros and are not even unnerved when a large Great White bumps the cage and the adults scramble for the boat, it’s brilliant to watch!”
Guests can enjoy one of two experiences, Shark Cage Diving or a Shark Breaching Trip. Shark Cage Diving involves being submerged in a shark cage as these majestic predators, up to 5 metres in size, come in for a closer look. Whilst the Shark Breaching trips show guests the raw power of these animals as they fly out of the water in pursuit of a seal shaped decoy.
There are also important educational and conservational aspects that The Shark Diving Unlimited team like to discuss on each trip. The Great White Shark is currently endangered and the crew aim to educate the children on board about conservation, so that these majestic beasts can continue to rule the oceans. Part of this work involves the eco friendly Sharksafe Barrier which the team is helping to develop. This they hope will reduce deaths of people and sharks worldwide.
The company is owned by “Sharkman” Mike Rutzen, who many children will know from his many shark documentaries and amazing ability to free dive with Great White Sharks, without a cage.
