Avis looks to emerging markets for further expansion

Having been recognised as the World’s Leading Car Hire by the World Travel Awards in 2013, Avis topped off another year of success.

In 2014 the brand has continued to make headlines, and here Breaking Travel News brings you some of the latest.

First up, Avis Car Rental recently confirmed it had selected a licensee to launch car rental operations in Laos and Cambodia.

Avis Car Rental will officially enter both markets with the opening of airport and city facilities in Luang Prabang, Pakse and Vientiane in Laos; and Phnom Penh and Siam Reap in Cambodia - making Avis the first international car rental company to operate in each of the countries.

“Strengthening our global position remains a high priority as we seek to drive sustained, profitable growth,” said Patric Siniscalchi, president, Latin America/Asia-Pacific, Avis Budget Group.

“Our licensee agreement with RMA Group will allow us to expand our global footprint and help to ensure that we are well-positioned to realise the growth potential of the Avis brand in each country.”

The new Avis facilities will serve local and international customers with a “one-stop” mobility solution.

Residents and visitors will benefit from Avis’ world-class products and services, including a wide range of well-maintained, late-model vehicles, short- and long-term rentals, personal and corporate car leasing programs, premium chauffeur and transfer services and outstanding customer service.

Customers will be able to book reservations over the course of this month as locations open.

“RMA is uniquely positioned to facilitate Avis Car Rental’s plan for growth,” Kevin Whitcraft, chief executive officer, RMA Group.

“We have long-established vehicle sales and distribution infrastructures in Cambodia and Laos, and we are the partner of choice to some of the world’s largest retail franchises in the Asia-Pacific region.

RMA is ready to support the enhancement of Avis’ global position as a leader in its sector, and will do so by providing best-in-class service in these two countries.”

Avis’ legacy in Asia can be traced back to 1970, when the Company opened its first location in Hong Kong.

Operations in Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Pakistan followed.

Operations have grown steadily throughout the region ever since, including Avis’ leading presence in China, which began in 2002.

Avis now has approximately 300 rental locations in Asia.

Commercial Leadership

In the UK, Avis Budget UK has announced the strengthening of its management team, with the appointment of Louisa Bell as commercial director.

Bell will be responsible for driving further success across the corporate business, overseeing all customer-facing revenue generation including the business-to-business, consumer and intermediary business.

She brings over 15 years experience within the travel industry, having previously held roles at Eurostar, British Airways and also sitting on the board of the Institute of Travel and Meetings.

Bell joins Avis Budget UK from Cigna HealthCare, where she was commercial director for the UK.

With the opening of its first rental location in Vadodara, in the state of Gujarat, Avis India has expanded its network to 20 cities and 45 rental locations, the most of any rental car company operating in India.

“With India now ranked as the world’s third-largest economy, we see new opportunities to expand our network and range of services to more industrial and business centres throughout the country,” said Patric Siniscalchi, president, Latin America/Asia-Pacific, Avis Budget Group.

“We have invested in our India joint venture specifically to further expand our presence in this fast-growing vehicle rental market, and to improve our brand position in India by increasing our fleet and network there.”

Avis locations throughout India are conveniently located in major downtown areas and industrial centres, with pick-up and drop-off service provided to and from major airports and rail stations.

Avis has been operating in India for more than 14 years, with a fleet of approximately 2,000 premium cars, through a joint venture of Avis Budget Group and The Oberoi Group, one of Asia’s leading hospitality companies.

“Vadodara, the third largest city in Gujarat, is growing as an important hub for business and leisure,” said Sunil Gupta, chief executive officer, Avis India.

The opening of our new office was necessitated by more and more corporations coming to the city.

“We want to provide them with Avis’ high-quality products and premium service here as well.”

Avis India is an industry leader in quality and reliability of service. Special services offered include both self-drive and chauffeur-drive cars, with a complete range of vehicles including Audi, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Toyota, Honda and many more.
