Luxury breaks at Convento do Espinheiro

One of only two Luxury Collection hotels in Portugal, the Convento do Espinheiro offers holidaymakers a breathtaking location for a lavish break in Europe.

Tracing its origins to an apparition of the Virgin Mary above the eponymous thorn-bush in the fifteenth century, this stunning location has a history incorporating King John II (who held court here in 1481), King Manuel I, King Afonso V and King Sebastião, who stayed at the convent.

Given this majestic history, the property is considered a national monument and is close to the historical city of Évora, classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage City.

Today the whitewashed architecture of the property is set among blue skies with puffy clouds and surrounding countryside verdure. With its renovations complete, visitors can enjoy the pleasures of the Portuguese countryside from the most modern of settings.

Modern History

Just two kilometres away from the city of Évora, the Convento do Espinheiro is surrounded by eight hectares of beautiful gardens, with the luxuriously decorated interior maintaining its original character.

The actual convent features 17 rooms and six suites, while renovations have seen a total of 69 rooms added – taking the present total to 92.

All rooms combine a tasteful décor with modern technology; equipped with mini bar, safe, telephone, wireless internet, air-conditioning, plasma TV and a luxurious marble bathroom with separate shower and bath.

Perfectly combining the old and the new, the hotel offers a gastronomic restaurant located in the former wine-cellar and a Piano Bar – located in what used to be the kitchen used by the monks.

Wine Tasting Break

For culinary visitors Convento do Espinheiro has a dedicated tasting area, where guests can enjoy local wines and savour regional dishes. Housed in the old gothic water depository, a sommelier can assist with private wine tasting sessions.

In warmer weather - when many guests enjoy the outdoor pool – visitors can also relax in the trendy Aqua Lounge, savouring a delicious meal while taking in the view of the beautiful gardens.

A fine Mediterranean dining experience also awaits at Divinus Restaurant, an elegant gourmet eatery. Walk through a pathway of candlelit arches to reach an exclusive table, set aside for an evening of fine dining.

Spa Holiday Ideas

Convento do Espinheiro is also home to the Diana Spa, which owes its name to Évora’s Roman Temple of Diana, and makes for the perfect retreat – offering a luxurious atmosphere where modern therapies and regional history combine.

Guests can experience personal treatments and world-class luxury at the spa, which offers the most advanced technology, or take a simple swim in the outdoor pool overlooking the rolling hills.

No wonder the location has been recognised by the World Travel Awards as ‘Portugal’s Leading Spa Resort’ each year since 2006.

MICE

Convento do Espinheiro also offers numerous meeting and event facilities, of various sizes and decors, all perfect for the celebration of different types of business.

Immersed in history, the Convento do Espinheiro offers a peaceful and inspiring atmosphere, ideal for a relaxed stay – be it business, pleasure or both.
